Missing In Action JG 5

Lien

This unit fought principally on the northern-most front of the war: in northern Norway and Finland, where its task was mainly to support bombers attacking the Allied convoys en route for Russian harbours. They also protected the German battleships and U-boats plying Norwegian waters. Numerous « free-chases » and ground attack missions were flown daily over Soviet territory.

Oblt. Horst Berger (left), leader of the 8. Staffel JG 5 was posted missing on 8th May 1944 during a combat over the Barents Sea in his "Black 11".

Oblt. Horst Berger (left), leader of the 8. Staffel JG 5 was posted missing on 8th May 1944 during a combat over the Barents Sea in his « Black 11 ».

Here follows the list of MIA pilots of JG 5. Any question concerning this list is welcomed. If you have the answer to just one of these entries, I would be glad to include your remark and name.

Became POW. (Thanks to Andreas Brekken and Rune Rautio)
This plane made a forced landing at Räetkävaara, northerneast Finland. Even today it is over twenty kilometres to the nearest road from this site. In order to become POW Seibt should have had walked at least 150km, cross a few roads and go under a few phonelines along his way.All this in deep snow and to begin with he was already completely out of his bearings when he made that forced landing. I rather believe that his remains are yet to be found at the Kaldoaivi wilderness.
The remains of his plane were salvaged in 1975 and nowadays are in Central Finland Aviation Museum. (Thanks to Harri Honkanen)

Missing In Action JG 4

Lien

Though one Gruppe was committed to intensive operations over Rumania and Italy in 1943 and 1944, the main operational theatre for this fighter unit was the Reich itself where its pilots fought against four-engined bomber formations and their escort. The losses were heavy, and, in the case of the second Gruppe, a special unit called a Sturmgruppe was formed, principally composed of pilots ready to ram the bombers.

Oberfähnrich Franz Schaar, of 5.(Sturm)/JG 4 , has been a long time posted as "Missing in Action" in the South Netherlands after the mission "Bodenplatte" on 1. January 1945.

Oberfähnrich Franz Schaar, of 5.(Sturm)/JG 4 , has been a long time posted as « Missing in Action » in the South Netherlands after the mission « Bodenplatte » on 1. January 1945.

Here follows the list of MIA pilots of JG 4. Any question concerning this list is welcomed. If you have the answer to just one of these entries, I would be glad to include your remark and name.

Missing In Action JG 2

Lien

Major Helmut Wick's Bf 109 E. On 28 November 1940, the Kommodore of JG 2 went missing south of the Isle of Wight. His body was never recovered and is thus still listed as missing, though it is almost certain that he perished that day.

Major Helmut Wick’s Bf 109 E. On 28 November 1940, the Kommodore of JG 2 went missing south of the Isle of Wight. His body was never recovered and is thus still listed as missing, though it is almost certain that he perished that day.

Here follows the list of MIA pilots of JG 2. Any question concerning this list is welcomed. If you have the answer to just one of these entries, I would be glad to include your remark and name.

Missing In Action JG 1

Lien

To summarise, in a few words, the history of his unit, Eberhard Burath, a former Adjutant, wrote: « Throughout the entire war, our JG 1 had the thankless task of defending the north-west flank of the Reich, which, until the Americans entered the air war, merited little attention. The Geschwader came to the fore with the start of the « Defence of the Reich », which was to be a harsh baptism of fire. »
